An overview of Kuantan and the resort town of Cherating
Guide to a relaxing beach getaway
Planning a visit to Cherating? Get a headstart to your preparations by getting to know some basics about the well-known resort town on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia.
A popular local and international tourist destination, Cherating was where we opened the first Club Med resort in Asia, and for good reason. A beautiful seaside town, Cherating holds its own as a laid back beach destination to get away from busy city life. But before we learn more about Cherating, let’s learn more about Kuantan, the city that Cherating is located in!
Kuantan: East Coast of Malaysia #Represent
When you travel by plane to Cherating, you’ll find yourself landing in the largest city in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia: Kuantan, the capital city of Pahang.
Kuantan, originally known as Kampung Teruntum, is said to have been around since the 1850s and is currently home to a population of over 420,000 people. As a popular local and international tourist destination, it comes as no surprise that its main economic activities centre around tourism. It is particularly famed for the production of the local fabric known as ‘batik’, salted fish, as well as handicrafts. However, this region is also notable for being home to a boisterous petrochemical industry as well as the production of timber and fishing.
Kuantan is located a 236 km or three hours’ drive away from Kuala Lumpur. It is also accessible by plane via Sultan Haji Ahmad Shah Airport, or by bus from most major Malaysian cities and Singapore via Terminal Kuantan Sentral, an integrated long-distance bus hub.
While Cherating has more than plenty to see and do, you can always take a day or two to explore what Kuantan has to offer, from its numerous beaches, waterfalls, parks, theme parks, as well as malls in the surrounding area.

Cherating: Kuantan’s Famous Resort Town
Cherating is located a mere 30 kilometres north of Kuantan, and is accessible directly from Kuala Lumpur by car. The town itself is a small place, with most places accessible by foot.
Boasting a wide, sandy beach where you can partake in numerous water activities such as yachting and surfing, Cherating’s seaside charm is accentuated by the nearby turtle sanctuary, where you can spot cute baby turtles and watch them be released back into their natural habitat.
There are also plenty of restaurants and entertainment venues in the area, though not nearly as many as other beach holiday locations. However, despite its limited dining and entertainment offerings, Cherating is still a fantastic place to go to if you want to relax without heading too far away from nearby cities in Malaysia or even Singapore.
